Steven Stichter
Relatively high-tech in the rest of my life, in art, I am drawn to older techniques hand-carved wood blocks for printing, manual quilting, individually set lines of lead text printed on a decidedly middle of the last century letterpress. The limits of these processes and their time-consuming natures cause me to slow, to look more closely at the world around me and in front of me. And they make me appreciate the benefits and appropriate uses of modern technologies!
As a quilter, I take an evolving, improvisational approach, primarily using found and donated materials. In my prints, I’m drawn to the power of tangible, tactile text in this digital age. In life and in art, I am drawn to the intersection of fields, ideas and techniques. I’m concerned about our impact as humans on this planetary home of ours, and believe in our ability to make decisions about living differently in response.
